Cool Weather Skincare

I browsed through several YouTube videos looking for basic winter skin care videos that I could plug into this blog. To be honest, I was not happy with a lot of them. I did find one video that I think is worth sharing with my readers.

The video is by amodelrecommendations. She discusses basic winter skin care and recommends some products. I am linking her video because I think her advice and recommendations are sound.

Low humidity is common during the cold season in many parts of the United States causing irritated, dry, cracked skin. We also see a lot more cracked, chapped lips. Surprisingly our skin does age in the winter months. Here are some of my personal winter skincare and anti-aging tips.

  • Use a humidifier
  • Apply a broadband sunscreen before leaving the house. Allow the sunscreen to rest on your skin for twenty minutes before applying an oil based moisturizer. This is an important step because the sunscreen must react chemically with your skin first.
  • Moisturize often throughout the day.
  • This is the best time of year to use Retin A. With fewer hours of sun you are less likely to damage your skin. Retin A is the gold standard for anti-aging.
  • Shed wet clothes immediately. Wet clothes can cause flare ups. Not only that, but wet socks are a great place for bacteria to grow. Stinky feet is all about bad bacteria. This can be a year round problem, but I do notice it more in the winter time because our feet are more likely to get wet and cold.
  • Dry Hair - do a mayo hair mask. Actress Joan Crawford swore by it. My grandparents also did the same. Mayo is a great hair treatment during the winter.

If you live in the Seattle Area - remember to keep your feet dry during the day. Pamper them at night. I recommend always wearing socks, use either baby powder or cornstartch to keep them dry during the day.

Chapped Lips - this is one of the worst winter skin care problems. After your evening shower when your pores are open, scrub your lips. You can make a basic lip scrub with one tablespoon of sugar and one tablespoon of olive oil. Scrub your lips well.  If you are short on time scrub your lips with your toothbrush, I have done this many times and it works very well. After scrubbing, apply your sunscreen - including your lips. Wait twenty minutes, then apply an oil based moisturizer. This routine should prevent chapped lips during the summer.
